Mississippi River Backwater
![]() The Mississippi River in Grant County, Wisconsin a place near and dear to my heart, where I go to find solace, to contemplate, and to reconnect with childhood. Recently this area has gotten a lot of rainfall. The backwater of the river has risen beyond the tree line and onto the grasses, providing protected areas for ducks, geese, fish and frogs.
As the days become warmer I'll see catfish hatchlings, large groups of ducks, carp jumping for insects, and turtles emerging to sun themselves.
Today, it's cool and windy with an overcast sky. My sister and I watch the swallows dance over the pools of water, plucking insects from the tall blades of grass. For both of us, the backwater of the Mississippi River is a special area full of life and good memories.
